Take me back to the good old days,
the gilded age and Watergate.
Take me back to the lies,
take me back to the time before we had eyes,
to see what we don't like and ask that damn question
“Where has the love gone?”
Take me back to the prejudice and hatred.
Take me back to Kent state.
Take me back to Vietnam or the Korean war,
Show me the pain,
take me back to the acid trips and daily mistrust,
Take me back to separate and unequal.
The day where black men could only dream.
Take me back when Nixon could plot and scheme,
Where wires were tapped and offices crawled with government bugs
Take me to past where we still would ask
“Why can’t we go back?”.
Take me to the time where Kennedy disappeared
and the country filled with tears.
take me back where men who spoke out lost their lives.
When it took a King to point out racial strife.
and take me back to the days after his death.
Where riots and hate plagued the nation.
Please as things start to go south here in the present,
can I not escape this whole I am digging?
I am to afraid and feeble to stand out like other great men have,
Instead I stand back and nod when people ask
“Can’t we just go back to the good old days?”
